In April, I promised that the very limited and somewhat incomplete interim carriageway works conducted on South Road Bridge would be followed by more comprehensive resurfacing works this summer. I am pleased to report that these works have now been scheduled for July 3rd-12th.
The works will cover from the North Street end of the bridge down to the South Rd./Ersham Rd. roundabout. I have also asked the Highways Steward to ensure that the hazardous faded white linings on the roundabout are refreshed. The zebra crossing should be refreshed at the same time.
As many of you know, I have been pressing officers for quite some time to get this and other roads in south Hailsham fixed. I am hopeful that by the end of this financial year South Rd, the Ersham Rd and Diplocks Way will have all received the badly needed attention that they require, supported in part by the extra £31 million of additional funding that we put into the county highways budget last year.
It should be noted that this funding increase, along with £5.8 million of additional one-off spending on pavements, road safety and spray patching, formed the centrepiece of our 2022/23 budget; a budget which opposition parties declined to support.
PLEASE NOTE: The dates for this piece of surfacing work has changed slightly to commence July 17th in order to accommodate the additional surfacing work on the Ersham Rd.
