It’s great to see my Conservative colleague & East Sussex County Council Education portfolio holder Councillor Bob Standley officially opening the Ropemakers Academy in Hailsham. This strengthens support for the education of local young people with social, emotional and mental health needs. It is part of a continuing programme of £42.8 million of investment in education facilities in the town.
Councillor Standley said: “Ropemakers Academy is the first newly built special school to be opened in East Sussex for some years, so it was a pleasure to be asked to cut the ribbon.” He added, “The Beckmead Trust, who will run the school, are new to East Sussex although they have vast experience across London and the South East. A new provider brings new and different ideas which are always welcome as we strive to deliver the best possible environment for children with special needs. The County Council have worked closely with the Trust to deliver these excellent facilities for disadvantaged children.”
Cllr Standley emphasised that “buildings are only part of the solution and we must offer special thanks to the staff and particularly to Simon Hawthorne as Headteacher who has led the school from its infancy in temporary accommodation into the permanent buildings. I am sure staff, families, carers and most importantly children will make this school a beacon of excellence.”
